Trimming that actually helps
Good tree trimming on a constrained lot is about weight and wind, not tidiness. We take out deadwood and thin the interior so gusts pass through the canopy instead of pushing on it. We also shorten limbs that are getting long enough to lever against the trunk. We do not top trees. Topping leaves large wounds that let decay fungi in, and the regrowth attaches weakly.
Well-pruned trees came through Hurricane Andrew at 73 percent survival, against 47 percent for unpruned trees in the same study. This is maintenance that pays for itself the first time weather comes through.
Removal where there is nowhere to drop it
